International Day of Rural Women, 15 October

The important impact that rural women and girls have on building climate resilience is undeniable. On the International Day of Rural Women, UN Women has called for action to support rural women and girls and grow their capacities to respond to climate change through agricultural production, food security, and natural resource management.

World leaders have committed to gender equality in climate change policy and response, yet progress has still been slow. It is imperative to upscale efforts to support women and girls in rural communities, particularly since globally, one in three women works in agriculture.

“Listening to rural women and amplifying their voices is central to spreading knowledge about climate change and urging governments, businesses and community leaders to act.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres
When it comes to owning land, accessing agricultural inputs, financing and technologies for climate resilience, women are often overlooked.

International days are celebrated with the aim of educating the public on issues of concern and to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems. International days celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. They are also a great opportunity to create awareness in your community and to initiate activities and workshops related to Sustainable Development.
