Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted in 1948, states in Article 26: ‘Everyone has the right to education’.
The right to education has been recognised in a number of international and regional legal instruments: treaties (conventions, covenants, charters) and also in soft law, such as: general comments, recommendations, declarations, and frameworks for action.
Education is the key to prosperity and opens a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society. It has an important role to play in engaging with young people and in cultivating a sense of shared responsibility for our common future.
While there has been significant progress in recent years, 57 million children are still out of school and 103 million youth worldwide lack basic literacy skills. There is still much work to be done to ensure that goal 4 is reached by 2030.
Generation Unlimited has seven strategic priorities to address the biggest global challenges related to youth and development. They are:
- Ensure secondary school experience transmits skills that young people need for the future of work.
- Provide young people outside the school system with opportunities for training and skills development.
- Improve connections between job seekers and work opportunities.
- Improve access to quality work opportunities for young people.
- Foster broad-based entrepreneurship as a mindset and a livelihood.
- Ensure equitable access to education, training, entrepreneurship, employment and civic participation.
- Equip young people as problem-solvers, contributing to a better world.
